I think changing it would take away a lot of the VN's message and meaning. I personally believe that the VN's final message was extremely potent and meaningful and that it's quite poignant, the way it was handled. Especially the ending alone could be discussed for hours. That being said, this part is also among the reasons why Tomoyo After is quite divisive among fans. I've heard talk about Tomoyo After being probably among Keys saddest VNs and I'm inclined to agree now. Probably the saddest stuff I've experienced in the medium. I'm a sucker for nakige, I really am, but this was really too much for me. that part though hits the feels harder than I would have imagined (even though I went into it spoiled - I still wasn't prepared). Until then the VN had quite some tearjerker moments. What I can say though is that this part feels the closest to a "true" sequel of the Tomoyo route in Clannad. I really can't talk about that at all as it would be essentially impossible to do so without spoiling it. Within this first part of the VN there were also smaller sub arcs dedicated to the other members of Tomoya's new family which all tied into the VNs impactfull message.Īnd then there's the second part of the VN. At the center of the first main arc is the little Tomo, who was abandoned by her mother and becomes Tomoya and Tomoyo's foster child, which was a really strong incentive for Tomoya's character growth but also for an important moment in Tomoyo's development. Aside from Tomoyo at his side as his girlfriend, quite a few people come to his life and basically become his family throughout the VN, each of them dealing with their own troubles and ghosts of the past. family.Īnd family is essentially a central theme in this VN. ![]() It was also incredibly inspirational to see how much he did in order to support the girl in his life and basically his. That really made him much more relatable compared to his high school self. He's still the same guy we've come to know, but he is much more dependable now and has a much more adult air to him. Due to that Tomoya has undergone heavy character development. This was a really refreshing change of pace and I really wish there'd be more VNs that actually deal with these kind of topics instead of relying on the tried and true high school formula. Tomoya graduated from high school and is now a working member of society, trying to make a living and the VN actually drives home how he actually gives his all in finding his place in the world, not as a child anymore, but as an actual adult. Well, first of all it's worth noting that unlike Clannad (and basically 95% of all VNs out there), Tomoyo After actually does not take place in a high school setting, but deals with the hardships of adult life. Now that that's out of the way, let's talk about what this VN is all about. But at the core these are the same characters. In addition the different character art added to this dichotomy. ![]() But I strongly believe that this is not due to the character writing but mostly due to Tanaka Ryouko sounding distinctly different from Kuwashima Houko. In that regard the whole VN felt quite different and many people seem complain that Tomoyo doesn't really feel like her old self from Clannad. Additionally Kuwashima Houko sadly didn't revisit her role as Tomoyo, that responsibility was handed to Tanaka Ryouko (who some might recognize as the voice of Yumiko from Grisaia among others). First of all, Itaru Hinoue was no longer the character designer/art director, this role was taken on by Fumio (also known for character art in the Grisaia trilogy) while Hinoue only helped him with the character designs. well, after Tomoyo's route in Clannad you will most likely feel a certain disconnect between the two works. Until the day you find your own treasure."īefore diving in to what makes this VN so special, I really have to address the elephant in the room: if you read Clannad and Tomoyo After back to back, or even Tomoyo After right.
